TURNING SLUDGE INTO SOIL :
CIRCULAR INNOVATION IN BRAZIL
An average of 94 . 1 % of sludge was sent
for vermicomposting , during the reporting
period , with only 1 . 3 % sent to landf ill . The
remainder was recycled or incinerated .
This means that almost all sludge
generated by our Brazilian operations is
diverted from landf ill .
Following the success of several pilot
studies , the sludge was formally
approved by the Brazilian Ministry of
Agriculture for agricultural use . As a
result , it is now sent directly to local farms
as organic fertiliser , replacing the need for
external composting services .
The fertiliser produced is also used
locally to grow vegetable seedlings
in biodegradable cups , which are
shared with employees and community
members during initiatives such as World
Environment Day .
From sludge to soil to seedlings ,
Brazil ’ s vermicomposting project
illustrates how simple biological
solutions can support circular waste
management at site level .
In Brazil , our teams use
vermicomposting to convert brewery
sludge into a nutrient - rich organic
fertiliser , supporting circular waste
management and reducing disposal .
